Hurt & Proffitt (H&P) provided consulting services for the evaluation, dam break analysis, hazard potential classification, and inundation zone mapping of two Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (VDCR) owned and operated flood control dams for conformance to new VDCR dam safety regulations. This work was done by H&P as a sub-consultant for consultant Austin Brockenbrough Associates, under ABA’s engineering services term contract with VDCR. H&P was selected by VDCR and ABA to replace the original engineering firm performing this work. The work for each dam included coordination with VDCR; hydrologic and hydraulic evaluation of dam watershed routing through the reservoir; analysis of various dam break scenarios using HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS computer software; recommendation of the hazard potential classification to be assigned; inundation zone mapping, and report preparation, submittal to, and approval by VDCR.
